There's been a recent decline in water quality and stream habitat . . .
reasons for water quality decline:
- direct pollution from pipes (combined and sanitary sewer overflows)
- runoff from urban areas and agricultural land
- poor stream bank land management
- low-head dam impoundments
ways to fix the problems:
eliminate pervasive bacteria problems
- eliminate sewer overflows (City of Columbus!)
- reduce home sewage failures that result in pollution
manage stormwater quantity
- preserve natural stream functioning
- store stormwater on the land where it falls, rather than concentrating it in certain areas
restore stream habitat in agricultural areas
- construct ditches
- establish riparian buffers
